The northern elephant seal (Mirounga angustirostris) is one of two extant species of elephant seal. The other species is the southern elephant seal (Mirounga leonina). It is a large seal, named for its imposing size and the trunk (or proboscis) that develops in males to act as a resonating chamber, amplifying the roars and belches they emit during competitions to assert dominance. Both the northern and southern species were nearly hunted to extinction by the end of the 19th century, but thanks to the implementation of strict conservation laws, they have made a significant recovery.
